Electrical Panel and Service Upgrades in Ottawa
Heat pumps, air conditioning, finished basements and new kitchens all add load to your electrical service. If your panel is full or your service is too small for what you want to add, HEC Ottawa plans and does the upgrade, and we can install the equipment that needed it.
Signs you need an upgrade
- You still have a fuse panel, or a small 60 or 100 amp service
- There is no room left in the panel for new breakers
- Breakers trip when several appliances run at once
- You are planning a heat pump, air conditioning, a basement or a kitchen renovation
Panel replacement and 200 amp service upgrades
A service upgrade can mean a new panel, a new meter base and a new service mast, coordinated with the utility for the disconnect and reconnect. We plan the power shut-off with you so it lands at a time that works.
Sub-panels
A sub-panel adds circuits where you need them, such as a finished basement, a garage or an addition, without rearranging the main panel.
Upgrading for a heat pump
Many homes can add a heat pump without a service upgrade, and some cannot. We check your panel and current load as part of the heat pump quote and tell you which one you are. See heat pump installation.
Panel upgrades questions
What size electrical service do I need?
It depends on the size of the house and what runs on it. Many newer homes have 200 amp service; older homes are often 100 amps or less. We work it out from what you have now and what you plan to add.
How long is the power off for a service upgrade?
For part of a day in most cases. We plan the shut-off with you ahead of time.
Do I need an upgrade to add a heat pump?
Not always. We check your panel and load as part of the quote and tell you honestly.
Can you add a sub-panel for my basement or garage?
Yes. A sub-panel is often the simplest way to add circuits for a renovation.
